There are lots of ways to do this. It's hard to get people to use new things so find out what they are using already and start there. Be careful of chat rooms and things because there are virus transmitting people there and Yahoo! Messenger transmits viruses easily. That's why I don't use it anymore. I use Yahoo! Mail and I even block HTML graphics to reduce the chance of infection.

If you want to chat with your frnds and relatives you can use Messengers like Yahoo,MSN, Gmail Talk.
For this you and both your frnds and relatives need to have a Yahoo mail Id for Yahoo.
Hotmail for MSN.
Gmail account fopr Gtalk.

you may try a gmail account
it has got an inbuilt chat feature
i usually chat with my friends with gchat only
but all of your relatives must have a gmail account
or
you may try skype(name of a software) for voice chat pc to pc free!!!!
