The most fundamental kind of energy (at least in classical physics) is kinetic energy, which depends on an objects mass and velocity:
E=1/2 m v^2 (this formular only applies to non-rotating objects but that's a minor detail).

Other kinds of energy are defined in such ways that the total energy of an isolated system (i.e. a system that does not interact with its suroundings) is constant. So you could define energy as:
"Either kinetic energy OR some other state that can turn into kinetic energy"

For example, when an apple hangs on a tree it does not posses kinetic energy, but it will aquire kinetic energy if it detaches. So we say that in the presence of a gravitational field, objects have "potential energy", defined as
E=m g h
where g is the gravitational acceleration (9.82 ms^-2) and h is the elavation of the object about some arbitrary ground level (in lab experiments, typically chosen as the table).

There are many other state variables that can also turn into kinetic energy: static-electric energy, nuclear energy, atomic binding energy, deformation energy of elastic strings etc. Heat is also a kind of energy as it is (at least in a gas) kinetic energy of molecules.

Energy is a fundamental quantity that every physical system possesses; it allows us to predict how much work the system could be made to do, or how much heat it can produce or absorb. In the past, energy was discussed in terms of easily observable effects it has on the properties of objects or changes in state of various systems. Basically, if something changes, some sort of energy was involved in that change. ...

energy can be potential [stored] or kinetic....from these vtwo qualities we see a variety of manafestations of energy....light ,heat .sound..gravity..intelligence...........it is a part of co-creation...acting with matter.....it can be measured and regulated...in its varied states.....SEE mathamatical formuli..... but intellectually...we accept the idea that it was there in the beginning and cannot be created nor destroy'd.....but converts and adapts itself...to the changing environment it created
we try to do likewise
