Girls, especially teenagers, are terrified of rejection. They are so self conscious about themselves and their bodies at this age, that it's better to secretly like someone than take the chance that if the boy finds out, he will dash any hopes that they can be together.

Because the guy most probably hasn't proven enough that he likes her so much that she'll be comfortable enough to open up.
So the best way to cope with this is to make the girls (me!) at ease and prove in the best way you can (if she's old fashioned, maybe flowers and chocolates? if she's not so, then maybe talking to her more) that she won't be hurt if ever she opens up.
It could also be that she will be put in some uncomfortable or embarrassing situation if she opens up. Or maybe, she just doesn't have "feelings". Maybe it's just that simple.

They are afraid of rejection. To be unattractive or undesired can be traumatic for some young girls. It is better to pine away in secret love, than to be rejected by the boy you desire.
