We close our eyes when sneeze because they violent force of a sneeze can cause minor haemorrhage or bleeding into the white of the eyes, or even worse a detached retina. It is a myth your eyes would fall out but the eyelid is a protective and cushioning screen to the eye. You cannot sneeze with your eyes open, anyone who says they can is fibbing as it is a safety/ reflex action just like pulling a finger away from a naked flame.

It is almost impossible for one to keep one's eyelids open during a sneeze, although some rare individuals report having little if any trouble doing so. The reflex of shutting the eyes serves no obvious purpose: the nerves serving the eyes and the nose are closely related, and stimuli to the one often trigger some response in the other. The closing of the eyes may be to protect the tear ducts and blood vessels from bacteria expelled in the sneeze.

No. Ive been sneezing all day and not seen yet where any of the boggies have landed.
Seriously, It is not possible. It's virtually impossible to hold your eyelids open while you sneeze. They snap shut by reflex. The nerves serving the eyes and the nose are closely intertwined, and stimuli to the one often trigger some response in the other.
I have seen idiots on telly trying to prove otherwise, prising their eye lids open with matchsticks and the like to force them to stay open. either the match pops out or impales the eye ball/eyelid.......
not very pretty....

It's a normal body reflex to close your eyes when you sneeze. The reason for that is in the enormous amount of air pressure you exert when sneezing, you tend to tension your facial muscles to avoid "popping your eyes out of their sockets". Strangely enough, because some people are able to sneeze with the eyes open, they just "learnt" to control the air release and therefore their "animal" part of the brain -the one responsible for reflexes- ceases to take control since it knows the sneeze isn't going to be strong.
It's not good to hold a sneeze in, or try to block it from happening because real damage to your eyes/nose/roof of the mouth can occur.

I am sure that is true. I have tried to keep my eyes open but found it virtually impossible. And I don't want my eyes to pop out really so maybe I shut them at the last minute!
