My wife is in her 36-week pregnancy. We were told by our doctor that our child is in a breech presentation (feet pointing to the birth canal). What makes matter complicated is that the umbilical cord is wrapping around his neck. We were told that vaginal birth is dangerous & a cesarean should be performed. Is this true?

Yes it is true as many others have already told you.

I would assume you are asking this question because the both of you may still prefer to deliver the baby naturally?

Well, while it is true tat natural birth mothers will recover faster and lose weight faster... C section is not that scary at all.

I had wanted a natural birth but my son's head was too big and I had to do a emergency C section.

It is not that bad, I fainted, woke up and my baby was up. As I did not go through the birth, i did feel somewhat shortchanged initially.. as if I did not have a complete initiation to motherhood..

It took a longer to bond to my baby but if you are breastfeeding, there is lots of time to bond and there are lots of other ways to bond.

Also, while it can take longer to heal.. would think tat little extra pain is little to pay for to ensure the safety of your little one.

Oh yes, forgot to include tat C section babies usually have nice, round heads.. hehehe..

Anyway, to inspire you a little, here are some pics of my cute baby son: http://verityy.blogspot.com

Good luck! :)

Both situations are bad by themselves, but together a c-section is the only way to delivery the baby healthy. The cord wrapped around the neck could strangle the baby if born vaginally. A breech baby might get stuck in the birth canal. Listen to the doctors...they know what they are talking about.

Think logically for a moment. You do not have to have an M.D. to understand that a baby, whom has the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, more than likely will not come out of vaginal birth alive.

Caesarean sections may seem "unnatural" but it is a much safer way compared to a decision on vaginal birth. If you want the baby to be alive, don't risk it and get the Caesarean. I wish you luck with your baby boy!

hey, yeah it is very very risky if your wife has a vaginal birth. I think they just give ceserean's now for breech babys. One of my friends babies was in normal position(head down) and the cord was wrapped and its neck and the baby almost died. It took about 10 minutes or so of recusitating the baby. So i would not recommend that your wife has the baby normally without a cesarean. If something happened to the baby you would both never forgive yourselves for not having the c-section. Good luck with everything.. -sorry about the spelling LOL

I had a C Section as my daughter was breech. Depending on the position of the breech baby determines if a normal delivery is safe, back in the day I was born I was also breech but my poor mum pushed me out and with the help of forceps and a lot of pain relief I did at last arrive OK. I had regular scans to see if baby had turned but its unlikely at 36 weeks, no room left for baby to turn. The doctor is obviously concerned about the cord and the safest thing for baby and mum would be to get your baby out quickly. Lots of women feel like they have missed out not giving natural birth but I was just happy that my baby was safe. Good luck

Absolutely. Why take a chance anyway? I have had both vaginal and C-section births. The down time is a little longer with c-sec, but it is worth it in the end. The scar is not so bad, about 4-5 inches long on the bikini line

When a baby is breech there is always the possibility that he/she can be turned to allow for a vaginal delivery, except in this situation. Turning the baby could result in strangulation. Obviously the delivery could strangle the baby. Your best option is the c-section.

As a physician I will tell you it is true and a C-section is highly advisable. We can rotate the child, but virtually working blind, we might be strangling the infant we are trying to save. Your physician is giving you wise advice. Follow his suggestion and enjoy your baby.

If the cord is round his neck, there would or could be a chance of strangulation.
