I am first time in Canada and would like to travel for 5 days in Ontario and Quebec with a rented car. What unexpected problems can be encountered?

None that I know off. We rented a van in Montreal and drove 5000Km in Canada in 14 days. Went from Montreal to New Brunswick, Past north of Ottawa, all the way to Niagara then back to Montreal. All we had to do was put gas and windshield cleaner. Gas/km wasn't bad either. $60 from Oakville, ON to Montreal and there was more than 1/4 tank left!

Gas is a little more money. Canadians are a polite bunch of drivers and that can cause a bit of confusion. Don't stop to ask for directions - a Canadian is most likely to get in your car and act as your personal guide. Jus' kidding - eh!

If you are travelling in Quebec, just brush up on the french terms for downtown or East or South... etc

You should not run into any problems. If you are not familar with metric, easy way to convert to mph is to multiply the first number by 6. For example 80km is 8 x 6 = 48mph or 50 to round off. 90km is 9x6=54 or 55mph. When you see 100km per hour signs 10x6=60mph. Other than the conversion, the signs are in french in Quebec but little problem. Enjoy your visit.

You would encounter the same unexpected problems you would encounter at home.

Everything is metric here - and your rental car will be in Kms rather than miles. Its the same difference. Speed limit on a 400 series highway is 100km. Your speedometer will show 100 km. Not hard.

5 days is not so long....if you aren't careful in your planning you may just end up spending all your time in your car. I would suggest you try to pick a few sights to see in one province - and stick to it. Rather than rushing to drive to the next spot.

just my thoughts...

i might ought to accept as true with Camille. It extremely relies upon on the variety you want to meander interior the path of the mountains. Kelowna is advantageous, so is Nelson. Radium warm springs. Kimberley the Barvarian city. The record is going on. in spite of if that's a lengthycontinual (take the southern path interior the path of the East Kootenays, no longer the northern path). As on your condo automobile: get something comfortable - an SUV perhaps. As I mentioned... that's a lengthycontinual, with an incredible type of "hill" in contact.
