Female bettas have a tendency to be more drab, their bodies are about the same size, but the male has longer fins (except for the fighting varieties). They can both flare.

Male Betta fish have long flowing colorful tails an females have less color and short tails. I was told by my local pet store that there are false females (they have short fins but are males) and that they tend to be sold at walmart as females. I'm not sure how true this is but it isn't a good idea to buy fish from walmart anyway, they tend to be sick and die.

Male betta are more attractive and colourful. The female betta are not very colourful, they may just have one basic colour.

Female Betta's are smaller and very drab looking. They don't have the fancy fins and various coloration.
