Well as far as I heard it was coz everyone was blaming him for Argentina's misfortune in he WC. Critics were not only blaming him but his mom too. The poor lady couldn't handle the depression and had to be taken to the hospital twice during the WC. So Riquelme called i quits because of his mom. I really don't know why they are blaming him and that too what has his mom got to do with this.
And I don't think anyone can replace Riquelme ... he was a really good player for Argentina but if u'r talking about captaincy I guess it'll be either Crespo or Heinze.

He claims that his mother's illness was due to the constant critics he's received after the 2006 World Cup and he doesn't want that kind of pressure affecting his family. Probably Sabiola could take his place and have Messi playing a bit forward?
