There's a big debate about this on some United boards I visit.

Basically he has "bite" That is he is a strong player and the best midfield tackler we have that can slot in at Defensive midfield. Now you recall how United wanted Senna and Hargreaves? Well they would have gotten that role O'Shea now has. But since they didn't, its just him. Flecther and Carrick don't really play that role, neither does Scholes so that means its just O'Shea for now.

this is because john o'shea is a good holding man...he keeps everbody in formation and defends the ball well before it gets to the likes of ferdinand who could make a mess of it..he does the same job gilberto does for arsenal and those are the type of key players needed in a squad thats why man u hav ben doing well... while we are at it fletcher aint a great playa so why didnt ferggie tak him of instead of rooney..i think that giant wad of bubblegum is getting to his head...but it benefitted arsenal!!!

since we lost keane we have needed a battler in midfield in tough games like arsenal i suppose SAF thinks that o'shea is the best that united has available for the job. we all know he is not a roy keane player and i'm sure SAF will be trying to address this in january don't forget he held out for Hargreaves but munich wouldn't let him go.

Because he is a good honest player who always gives 100%. Perhaps Fergie should not have let Phil Neville go if he is lacking a holding midfield player.
