If its a small area then electric is fine as long as you figure out the best cutting pattern so you arn't constantly having to move the lead. Unless by electric you mean "battery" in which case a well kept lawn that takes no more than 1/2 hour to mow as the batteries realisticaly start to loose their power quite dramaticaly after that time. Petrol is excellent for larger areas, 1/4 acre plus.

My lawn is about 120x30 feet and I have used a petrol Honda for the last 5 years with no problems, it has a 17 inch cut, (wish I had got the 19 inch!) and a powered roller at the rear for the nice stripe effect. Takes about 30 mins to cut unless I leave it too long and have to take two cuts at it! The ground is quite uneven as well.

10 years ago electric was the machine of choice. But modern petrol mowers have become very cheap and this makes them preferrable, even for small lawns.... No more moving that boring cable about!
Petrol mowers can cut wet grass , unlike their wimpy electric counterparts. And you can get one that will drive itself along, minimising exertion on your part.
With a lawn the size of yours, it's a no-brainer. Petrol wins hands down. The sales will be starting soon so wait a few weeks and grab a bargain.

For the best long term investment, as well as the best looking cut, get a manual, push type reel mower. The lightweight aluminum framed models are as easy to use as a gas powered rotary, and cut much nicer.

I have had this argument with the South Downs Conservation Board. They seem to think cows are best. But this is so public lands can be put back into agriculture for the benefit of the farmers.

I personally would not want to mess with a electric lawnmower. I own a john deere mower and it has never given me much trouble. Nothin' runs like a deere
