I need to know what the offical (potentially set down in statute) categories of disability (e.g. visual impairment, mobility etc)

Don't be lazy!! Got to opsi.gov.uk look up the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and it gives the definitions of what is a disability in the first section of the act.

It's actually a lot less specific than you think and describes more characteristics of disabilities than defining set ones. If you're looking more at benefits and who qualifies then the Department of Work and Pensions will have the info you need
