Does K stand for kilometers? Sorry to ask such a retarded question.

K=kilo=1 thousand.

In this instance it refers to meters, so 5K is 5000 meters (5 kilometers)

well it depends if it is running or an inderance race they are talking about 5k as in thousand miles. but you maybe right. I know in nascar though when the say pepsi 500 they are talking about how many laps they are going to run.
