I work in market research and most of these companies are reputable and pay you in points (e.g. nectar points) or occasionally gift vouchers. However, it is often the case that you don't meet all of the criteria to take part so don't get to complete the survey which mean you do not recieve maximum points.

They are real. I do various surveys, points systems for reading mail, recording my shopping purchases etc. Doesn't pay much, but I save it all up and in December have around £150 to spend for xmas. EDIT: All those suggesting they are a scam should do a little more research. Web surveys are more and more popular with market research comapnies as it is a hell of a lot cheaper to run a survey, no phone costs, marketers, printing etc, so they all go for it now. Here are some I have received payments from: yougov ciao tns american consumer panel (and I'm English) Mutialpoints (not surveys but paid to click e-mail links. So maybe some are a scam but I can assure you there are genuine sites out there. You won't earn much but can be fun to do.

There are both scams and legitimate paid survey sites out there.
I've listed some of the sites I have taken surveys through and actually been paid (or recieved other rewards like gift cards or CDS) on the following, if you are interested:

Here's some ways to avoid the scams.

Don't sign up for any survey site which asks you to pay to access the surveys. Also watch for language like "get paid for taking surveys AND SIGNING UP FOR OFFERS" if you don't want to have to sign up for stuff with other companies to get paid.

Always carefully read their terms of service and privacy policy. If in their privacy policy they say they only use aggregated info, this is GOOD SIGN they are legit. Aggregated info information that is grouped together so it can't be connected with anyones personal identification like name, e-mail, phone or address. That's what survey sites SHOULD collect. Watch out for sites that say they give, rent, or sell any personal information (info that is not agregated) to third parties.

Check out the Work from Home Guide

http://www.workfromhomeguide.net

They have a ton of survey sites that they offer for FREE. No catch, either. They have checked out all the survey companies with the BBB and other professional organizations.

Never pay for this information.

Most aren't, because it's in their interest not to get labeled as a no-go-area, but at the end of the day the amount you're awarded is slim-pickings to anything they'll get for selling on your information.

I have only had experience with one---Panda Research.
they are legit, but a real pain to get paid from.
You have to have a Paypal account, and they wait for verification from the surveys you complete before you get paid. Plus, you have to have earned a certain amount before they will cut the check.
It was just way too many hoops for me to jump through.
Maybe you will have better luck!!
