Up until recently I never even heard of them... I was wondering what the purpose of them was. Why do gays need a 'special' bar?

Because of the closed minds and objections that most of the world has towards us. What do you think the reaction would be if were were in a straight bar and sat arm in arm, kissing, etc., like straight folks do? More than likely a very negative response. So until the world accepts there's a need for a place for us to call "our own."

"Up until recently?"

REALLY?

What rock have you been living under? Gays/lesbians have had their own bars forever. It's not a new fad it's an established tradition.
Gays and lesbians have their own bar so they have a place to congregate and socialize where they will feel safe and welcome. Where they don't have to compete, be harassed or conflict with straights in a social setting. There are as many different kinds of gay/lesbian bars as their are straight bars too. Some are Country/Western Bars, some are hot Discos, some are just local watering holes, some are "fern" bars, some are eatting establishments as well as bars, some are "leather" bars, some are "kink" bars, some are "goth" bars...etc.
Just like with straight bars but the clientel is gay/lesbian.

I am certain you have some stories! Not all that long ago, if you were found to be gay, you stood a good chance of being found death by neighbors ( In other words, they killed you)

If any one thought you were gay, you could also be shipped off to a mental ward! Also if you were caught masturbating, that was classed as a gay act, and off you would go to a mental ward!

So they started opening bars, in out of the way places. Where gays could meet up and be themselves! Which also included having sex in the back room and or finding a partner!

Gays have plenty of sex. In fact based on regular society gays would be classed as total whores and sluts! Of course you have your rare exceptions! If your young and easy to look at, every one will want to go to bed with you! As you grow older, you may as well hang up sex all together! Depending on the individual this starts at age 30 in gay society! With this they are the biggest bigots going!

One very good reason is that when I see a nice man in a STRAIGHT bar and chat him up or ask him for a date, in many instances he becomes aggresive. I a gay bar I do not have to deal with that attitude.

usually straight men don't like to be hit on by gay men, therefor the whole concept of gay bar takes out the threat of hitting on someone that doesn't want to be hit on by a member of the same sex.

thats just one of the reasons. the rest is that its kind of like a middle age bar, a country bar, a electronica bar, a piano bar... its a bar that appeals to a certain clientel.

The "Purpose" would be the same purpose any other group of like minded individuals have for meeting.

Haven't been to one in years..but it's a place where you can go and know that everyone is gay...It's a lot easier to pick up someone if you already know that they are gay.
