The president has no power to control gas prices. This is a free market economy. The only organization that can make laws in the USA is Congress. The federal tax rate is 18.4 cents per gallon right now. Congress could have simply reduced the tax or suspend it for 90 to 120 days.
But wait, I think Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Howard Dean would have all said that would be a tax break for the rich because they can afford the $3.50 cents a gallon. The poor always ride the bus.
The tax for gas by state can be found at this web site http://www.gaspricewatch.com/usgastaxes.asp.
Here is what it costs to generate a gallon of gas. Taxes are about 23 to 27%, cost of crude is 44 to 47%, there are refining costs, etc. This can be found at http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/analysis_publications/primer_on_gasoline_prices/html/petbro.html
My questions is why is milk so expensive? Cows eat grass, you milk them, heat it a little, put it in a bottle, and put it on the shelf. That is pretty cheap to do compared to what it takes to make a gallon of gasoline.

Well, the only possible answer I could see, is that maybe we would not have ended up in Iraq, and therefore some of the oil production that slowed would not have done so. I don't think it really would make much difference, and people who make partisan comments like that are just partisan. I tend to lean liberal myself, but a lot of these finger pointing situations are ridiculous. Come up with a solution instead of blaming. Everything isn't perfect, but it's where we are at, let's make the best of it, move forward, and if the populace wants a Democrat, vote him in 2008

It wouldn't really matter, the increase in prices was mostly due to an increase in global consumption.
Maybe if we had higher taxes in the US and more trade barriers, consumption in China in particular would have decreased due to a slowing of imports caused by trade barriers and consumers having less money. That's quite a stretch, so don't put too much stock into it.

Politicians can't actually control the price of oil, even if folks attribute omnipotence to them.
