I have had friends like this. I learned that as long as the lies did not have a profound impact on my life, then I could overlook them. If they are bothering you that bad or they are having a negative effect on your life, then do not bother with them anymore. However, I do advise that you use this as a lesson in tolerance because as you get older you will encounter other people in your life such as co-workers who will do the same, and they may not be as easily disposed of.

Lying unfortunately is a compounding situation. You end up telling more lies to cover the old ones. The best way to get past this is to confront them, and tell them how important the honesty is in your friendship. Let them know you care about them, and don't be judgmental for their shortcomings. That's part of the reason people lie, is to avoid negative reactions, or to get their desired results. Work on it, plan some compromises, and you have to call them out when they lie. Set up consequences for them if they continue. They have to know there is something to lose if behavior continues to go down that path. Forgiveness for the past is important to move forward. Just don't let it overwhelm you.

remember that liars r very very very hurt ppl ..it comes from self-hatred ...he is not lying because he thinks it's good to do it...he is doing it because he is feeling that he (or his life) is not good enough....your best friend is already hurt enough...and probably the last thing u wanna do is to avoid him after u find out...what i would do (and i v already done that, i v been in similar situation) is make him feel better about himself...just talk to him...try to find out what is bothering him...but not by saying 'hey dude i know u r a liar and something is wrong with u so y dont u tell me now'...just do it gradually...try to talk him into it...i believe that when u r honestly care about people, they feel it on a subconscious level...and that is a straight way to their trust...they will believe u and share with u...once your best friend shares with u, it ll make both of u guys feel better...after all, u may realize that he is not so much of a liar ...and just make him feel better about himself on a daily basis too...just say how much a cool person he is...i had a friend like that and it totally worked...oh, and one time, what i did was i actually told her first that i used to lie a lot before but now i stoped because it was not a way out..it created more problems..she just looked at me with that look...i think it worked ..it made her think u no...anyway dont turn away from you BEST as u said friend....

If his lies are harmful to others then you might consider finding another best friend, if on the other hand , it's his way of keeping or building his self esteem, no harm no foul.
As a man once said of another: "he won't let a little lie stand in the way of a good story".

Liars should be avoided, otherwise, you will become a cohort or accomplice to crimes.
