Tie a Yellow Ribbon came from one of the earlier wars of the 20th century, I'm willing to back as far as WWI. It's a soldier telling his family not to worry about him and to keep a visual aid (the yellow) ribbon so he can find his way home. As long as there is war, it will be relevant.

Readers Digest July/August 2015, Page 116, A story by Pete Hamill from the New York Post tells the story of the guy that got out of prison in New York and was on his way home to Brunswick, GA and writes his wife and ask her if she will let him come home. If the answer is yes, then tie a yellow handkerchief around the old oak tree.

Could this story possibly be the idea for the song "Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree"?

Article first appeared in the January 1972 issue of Reader's Digest.

During the Iran hostage crisis, the yellow ribbon was used a symbol of support for the hostages held at the U.S. embassy in Tehran. This symbolism began in December 1979, when Penelope Laingen, wife of the most senior foreign service officer being held hostage, tied a yellow ribbon around a tree on the lawn of her Maryland home. The ribbon primarily symbolized the resolve of the American people to win the hostages' safe release, and it featured prominently in the celebrations of their return home in January 1981.

The yellow ribbon saw renewed popularity in the United States during the Gulf War in the early 1990s. It appeared along with the slogan "support our troops", in the form of yellow ribbons tied to trees, and countless other contexts. It often had the implied meaning of supporting the Desert Shield and Desert Storm troop deployments themselves and/or loyalty to President George Bush, and therefore became somewhat politicized. It appeared again during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq with similar meanings, most prominently in the form of a yellow ribbon printed on magnetized material and displayed on the outside of automobiles.

However the original meaning speaks of an ex-inmate in Miami, Florida who was on his way home following his release from prison. He had written to his wife to ask whether she would still want him back and if she did, to tie a yellow ribbon round the only oak tree in the city square.

It is about giving ex-convicts a second chance in life.
Story has it that an ex-convict wrote a letter to his wife asking that, if she forgave him, show him by tying a yellow ribbon around the oak tree in his hometown. When he reached his hometown, the entire oak tree was covered with yellow ribbons.

NO,it does not. It is about a dirtbag getting out of prison, admitting he knows what a useless jerk he has been, asking his ex to forgive him, but knowing the chances against that , he says if you want me to stop , tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak. If it is not there I will just stay on the bus and go on.. she tied a hundred..it has nothing to do with iraq

The original song was about a man returning home from being in jail and he wanted to know if the wife wanted him back...the song was later used during the hostage situation in Iran,,we tied yellow ribbons for them to come home safely...It was also used for an Aids awareness day as well,,but mostly used in times like this to show support for our troops till they return home.

The song has nothing to do with soldiers. It has to do with a man coming home from prison. The yellow ribbon has since been used to welcome home soldiers and people who have been kidnapped. It is a means of saying we want you back home and we love you still.

Why do you call me Father, Father and did not do the things that I say on planet earth.
Father, Father we lost the instruction manual on planet earth.
We are your prodigal sons we had enough of the misery of toyland on planet earth.
We will " Tie up a yellow ribbon" to let Father know we be coming home soon.

Putting up yellow ribbons basically means support for those that are fighting wars or away from us for some reason like a lost love. It represents our hope that they come back to us.
