gmail is beta because they still develop and test it. beta means that there are no guaranties about it, but doesn't mean that there are errors.
i am using gmail for some time and i hadn't problems with it.
i strongly recommend it (although i still have my yahoo address for old friends who still email me there)

good luck

While I suppose you can say there's no "smart" spam filter, Gmail does a good job of initially filtering out the junk emails.

I've been using Gmail for about a year, and use it as my primary email (purchasing online, communication, etc.) and I love it. Ans yes, while it's still in Beta and has the possibility of malfunctioning, it's been doing pretty well so far, and probably will in the future.

I have a gmail account. I like it, but i still use yahoo as the main email program. It`s beta because it`s still being tested. I like it, and had no problems with it. I like it because it offers a large variety of services (like automatic mail forwarding, mobile access, POP3 etc.) for free. You can get an account only by invitation. So all in all I like it, but won`t switch 100% `cause it`s still beta, even though it works fine.
