Say yes, take the pacage from her, but then accidently forget to pack it with your stuff. Aploigize when you get back and tell a story of how it was a good thing you forgot because some other people were busted for that very thing (the truth). Not taking packages for someone else is the number one thing any travler is advised against.

Do you mean pirate or private? On something like that, I think I would have to weigh the benefits against the consequences. If you're talking about pirate dvd's, what would the penalty be, and how much would it cost to just buy the licensed versions? Sorry about all of the questions, but that typo makes a big difference. If they are private, are they something the Chinese government doesn't want to get out? That could have serious consequences either way. If they are of that kind, it might be possible to get them moved out through the US Embassy instead.
To get out of it means breaking your word, that's something I never do lightly, and I can see you don't either since you're asking for suggestions. If she is your friend, then she deserves nothing less than the truth from you. Tell her you are afraid of getting caught, that you had given an answer before you really had time to think it over, and you don't want to do it. Then ask her to forgive you for any problems that might cause her. We all make mistakes. Fools repeat their mistakes, educated people learn from their mistakes, and wise people learn from the mistakes others make.

You don't need to make an excuse. Just tell her the truth.
The fact is that security has been stepped up recently. Your chances of being caught now are much greater than they were even a few months ago. It is illegal, and there are penalties if you are caught. It isn't worth getting in trouble just for pirated movies. Just tell her about the security situation, and if she presses you, just tell her no, you are sorry, you are not willing to take the risk.

Scared of DVD's? Hmmm...
I would agree to bring them, but I would want to make sure what they contain (I know your fear... a friend had given me something for her cousin in the USA and it was in a sealed package and at some point I was scared that I may not know what was inside it really), including, if possible, a run of the dvd's themselves. I know it will sound paranoic, but... you may say you read there are some restrictions about content imported (e.g., child porn :-/ ) and you don't want to get in trouble.
Generally, if you are afraid, if you are unclear, it's safer not to do it. If she is open and agrees to let you know, and you know it won't be problematic, just go for it.

Ditch the DVDs before you get to the airport. Tell her customs took them, lol. Better then commiting an international crime and risking punishment in China if you fell like you can't tell her the truth.

There isn't an excuse........it is an issue that is law. Just tell her that you can't bring yourself to do something that might get you in to trouble. Tell her you want to enjoy your trip and don't want to get in trouble for anything.
So, you don't need an excuse, you just need to explain this to her. IF she gets upset, then she isn't much of a friend.
Tell her that you said yes before thinking about it and now after thinking about it you Just can't do it.
There is no dishonor in you saying no. But, there is dishonor in her asking you to do something illegal and putting you in the position of getting caught smuggling.

you wouldnt be refusing because you already agreed (without thinking of any kind of consequences first) its okay to say no if you think it will jeopardize your freedom. what is more important, you being free and out of trouble or you doing your friend a favor that she could handle through UPS.

Is it illegal? If so tell her that you would like to help her out but won't risk getting into a jam and don't worry about it if she is mad. A real friend wouldn't ask you to take that kind of risk.
Good luck!
