In the process of a developing a romantic relationship, I tend to be the pursuer, making most of the calls, sending cards, etc. Yet, if I should start to back out my love interest starts to pursue. I am getting tired of this pattern, when do I give up on this relation.

Your interest might be just to conquer, and to reconfirm to yourself, that you can persuade, that you can have somebody. And the object of your interest remains interesting only until it has to be conquered. After that you drop it.You might have self esteem problems and in order to solve this problem, I suggest that you think about the fact that you don't have to prove to yourself anything, try to find a person to whom you are truly attracted to,don't exagerate to make too many calls and don't send too much ecards either. I wish you found a person, who will not be easy to have! Then you won't lose interest!:)
And...if you are a woman, you encourage men too much! Men like women who are not easy to have!

If you are a female you are being too aggressive early in the relationship. This makes you seem needy and tends to scare the guy off. Why don't you stop this pursuit and let the other party do a little of the chasing? Men don't like push overs, they like challenge.
