The Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America are the world's longest rivers. The Nile is 6,670 km long, and the Amazon is 6,448 km long. It is difficult to give an exact length because these huge rivers split into tiny tributaries near their sources, and some of these dry up or change course. The Amazon is by far the largest river because it carries more water than the Nile, Mississippi and Yangtze put together.

The Nile ;
Ancient Egyptian iteru), a river in Africa, is accepted by most authorities as being the longest river on Earth, about 4,184 miles long! The Nile has two tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile, the former being the longer of the two. The White Nile rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source in southern Rwanda 2°16′55.92″S, 29°19′52.32″E, and flows north from there through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and southern Sudan, while the Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana in Ethiopia, flowing into Sudan from the east. The two sections meet near Khartoum.

The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilization has depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population of Egypt and all of its cities, with the exception of those near the coast, lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan; and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river.
