This is one of the reasons why we moved away from the UK. £45 fine what a disgrace. One question, if this was a white UK citizin what would the punishment have been??
I think because of the state of the goverment and law system this is making normal placid Brits predjudice againts everyone else!
It is about time something REAL was done to stop this!!

Err first you posted no evidence for this so people could actually read the story from an informed point of view (ie a jounalists, not yours).
Second his religion, immigration status, hair colour and his favourite number one record since 1980 have nothing to with the sentence the court handed down, nothing. If you posted proof that for instance last year X number of people paralysed another person in car accidents of this type, and then proved that some persons who could be categorised as similiar got a different sentence on average than another group of similiar persons then yes your question would have some merit.
You don't though. Your question is deliberately designed to cause argument and strengthen your own beliefs by having other uneducated people agree with you.
The fact the person was an Asylum seeker has nothing to do with it, in fact as an Asylum seeker they were likely fleeing torture, war or abuse in their own country. Asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants, they are by definition without status and awaiting judgement on their status from the authorities, ie not you.
The judge handed down the sentence, judges have long experience in court having served the prosecution or defence positions for many years usually. The sentence handed down was within the guidelines they were given for sentencing, the same ones as would be applied to you if you had accidently paralysed another person.

In the UK fines are levied, in part, on the convicted persons ability to pay (therefore a millionaire pays more than a tramp for the same offence). I guess this person (& I'm not aware of the story) has nothing, so what is the point of fining him £45,000 when he can't pay...anyhow it wont turn back the clock for the poor old lady will it?
The Brit legal system (& those that grew out of it eg RSA) is influenced by its Christian heritage. This emphasises forgiveness, tolerance, restitution, proprtionality etc. So people are treated (largely) as individuals rather than robots, & THEY are judged. In other societies the CRIME is judged. One such is the muslim tradition. Here we find people being punished purely due to the CRIME rather than the CIRCUMSTANCES.
Which system would you rather live under?
The judge in this case was aware of all the facts. You are not. Neither am I.

If Asylum seekers break the law they should, without discussion be sent straight back to where they came from, let's see how quickly the crime rate drops when there is a SERIOUS threat of being deported. I'm not a racist, although I hate ALL straight people, I'm a foreigner working in Switzerland and if I break the Law I WILL BE deported. ENGLAND has to stop protecting the guilty and realise that the image of rose-gardens in Devon is being destroyed, by the reality of London's stinky, dirty and unsafe streets, (Ex Londoner)

I'm sorry, are you actually surprised by this? I thought it was now common place to put the offender first in the UK after all it's them who seem to have all the rights.
