Or do anything, for that matter? I'm finding it hard to to summon up the motivation to do even the most mundane tasks. Please, if anyone can give me a reason - any reason but religion, that is - I'd greatly appreciate it.

You can't find a reason to get up in the morning because you are not really excited about anything. You said it yourself you can't summon up the motivation to do even the most mundane tasks. It can and does happen to most people at some point in their lives.

The quetions you should be asking are: How long have you been feeling this way and how concerned are you about it? If it is a short-term thing, it may go away by itself. If you have been feeling this way for many weeks or more OR you just want to do something to fix it - then read on...
1. You will have to find the courage to talk to someone - a good friend you can trust, a parent, or maybe a professional counsellor
2. If you like to read - read up on "depression" - you might be depressed or you might not. Only a professional can figure that out. But reading on it can only help you.
3. It can even be caused by chemical or hormonal imbalances in your body - and hence it might make sense to see a specialist.

Good luck.

This sounds like a psychological, rather than a philosophical problem. I would suggest seeing a psychologist if the feeling persists, or if you start having suicidal thoughts. Of course, it is a limitation of the human brain that it has no mechanism to distinguish for itself the difference between a psychological or philosophical problem. Keep this in mind if the feeling lingers but you can not convince yourself that it is not philosophical.

From a philosophical perspective I believe that you will never find a reason in this world. It is a BYOR kind of universe. Since it sounds as if you have a dislike for religion (A very health dislike in my opinion), Perhaps, you could temporarily adopt one of my reasons: to alleviate the damage done to mankind by the horrible parasitic infection of faith that has reeked so much havoc on our poor species.

Best of luck to you.

I feel similar about religion too ! But there are as many positive reasons to encourage as to sleep . might be one of two different approaches positive thinking breeds positive feeling or biologically enhanced brain chemistry allows the brain to function
on the normal levels allowing for proper attitudes to develop.
Come to think of it it's probably both...... put aside the faith in fantasy and find a dietary anti depressant or a medicinal one .myself I prefer the mild effects of Acetyl L Carnetine. But don't drop the dreams of the less mundane we all need meaning.
Enjoy it!

two reason come to mind initially

you'll spill your coffee if you don't get out of bed

you'll need "depends" after the coffee

other reasons?
if you are depressed...see a doc...and enjoy better living through chemistry
if you are just lazy...you had better be rich enough to hire a nanny
if you are just going through a "phase" of your life such that the word "ennui" comes to mind....wait it out...things will always get worse...remember the old saying...
"it always seems darkest before it gets pitch black"
if you are bored with work and/or school....change your routine..add a little "spice" into your life

if you are truly depressed about living...see a psychiatrist right away....today...tomorrow...this week
if you are just tired...sleep
if you are just foolin'....get a life

Remember the words of Dostoevsky [from "notes from the underground and dreams of a ridiculous man]

" I would put dynamite under the four corners of the world and blow it all to hell, except today is not my birthday and therefore it would have no significance"

or the joyful words of Poe

" is all we see or seem only a dream within a dream?"

sleep well...wake with the birds...shoot the birds...go back to bed

It sounds like it could be mild depression David. Is your general health ok? Is so, then definitely mild depression. There is not necessarily a need for medication.......exercise is a good natural stimulant, which I know sounds stupid, given your question, but give it a go and see if you feel any better.
I'm not talking any violent exercise.....just a good brisk walk or cycle......or 10-20 laps of the pool.
All the best....

Perhaps the body is dominating the mind right now !
No point trying to fool ourselves with ideas to "try" to motivate ourselves with words like "duty" "responsibility" to self others, etc.
When the mind is in control of body, we start using it like our loved vehicle , say a well maintained motorbike, to be used fully (not sparingly), and also to be very well maintained to ensure trouble-free service.
So let us look practically if we experience "us" as the body or in the body! And then try to see if it is sensible to put this body to best use, offering it to ourselves, and those around, including all living beings, making it do its best, all the waking hours, improving its performances, skills, making life a thrilling adventurous drive(riding our being on this body).
Please tell if this attitude works !

there is a whole world out there, full of things that will make you laugh and cry and hate and want and try. if you don't like where you are, take a second and realize that YOU CAN CHANGE IT. you can be homeless if you want. you can join the army. you can hitchhike to hollywood and audition for commercials. the point is, there are options. you can lie in bed and be miserable. or you can get up and go see something, feel something, learn something, taste something new. it's so easy to die. living is a challenge.

If you want good health, get up early. The early risers have good health. It is recommended one should get up before sunrise.

You can have enough time to do morning chores including some exercise, morning walk or yoga which is again good for health.
