self determination - its the only way out dude!

2006-09-17 20:38:11 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

I am a smoker, but have stopped smoking several times in my life. I have tried all the patches, gum etc. I find that anything that is a nicotine substitute is a really useless aid to stopping. If, like me you are a complete addict, it is the drug that you crave, not the action of smoking. Patches and gum simply replace the nicotine with something else. I spent a fortune on patches over a period of three months, and did exactly what the instructions said. On my last day (on weeny small patches) I thought I had cracked it.

The next day I went and bought a packet of cigarettes.

The most successful way I have found to stop smoking is to use no medical aids whatsoever. I started going to a gym. Whenever I felt like a cig, I went to the gym instead. God was I fit!!

I find exercise helps relieve the craving. After three weeks, the craving began to subside, and I continued to not smoke for three years.

I am smoking again now, but plan to give up soon. I plan to do exactly the same as the time I have just described. Keep away from nicotine substitutes - they just prolong the agony!!

Allan Carr's - 'How to Stop smoking' is also a great book to help you through.

Good Luck!!

The best thing to make you stop is YOU

You have to want to stop first and foremost. Once you are committed to stopping, start by cutting down the number you smoke each day. Get it down to under 5, then slap on a medium patch and stop smoking.

You should find it relatively easy, as you're actually getting more nicotine than when you were smoking 5 a day.

Give it a week or two and then stop wearing the patches and see how you get on. Avoid places with lots of smoke and when the urge hits, think of something else for a minute and you'll find it has passed.

I used this method nearly 5 years ago, and I'm still a non-smoker. I still get the urge now and again, and I still like the smell of someone else's fags, but I don't want to start again.

in my line i deal with a lot of ppl trying to quit smoking. Only start nicotine replacement if u have absolutely made up ur mind to quit smoking and set a date to stop smoking. Only start the treatment on the quit date. The patch works better if u have the craving thru'out the day. The gum is better if u only smoke at certain trigger points, eg. upon waking or after meals. For some a combination of the 2 works best....the patch as base protection and the gums when the urge is just overwhelming. Record ur smoking pattern for about a week to have a clearer picture where are ur weakness points. Anyway...always always wait 5 minutes before reaching for the ciggy, and tell ur family and freinds u want to quit the habit...make them ur support core. All the best!!

Answered questions like this many times before!

Each individual is different. I used no drug aids (i.e. Nicotine gum/patches) but instead I set a date three months in the future when I was going to stop lighting up. During those three months I done shed loads of reading on the damage smoking does to you and the people around you. Disease, chest complaints, less efficient immune system, loss of fitness etc.

Before three months I was actually LOOKING FORWARD to the day I stopped.....but still.....dont stop until that day.

Dont ever use excuses to keep smoking like stress at home/work, holiday coming up, wedding coming up etc etc. There will always bne an excuse.

Easy Way - Allen Carr. Get it on Amazon. Cheaper than patches, Gum. Helps you discover how you learned to smoke and unlearns you! Also deciding that you really really really badly want to stop smoking because all the reasons to be a non-smoker are better than the reasons to carry on. Take up a different life threatening hobby!

If you speak with your stop smoking team at you local GPs surgery. They will give you patches for free. I used them and haven't smoked for 3 months. they give you certain mg patches to how much you smoke and then they prescribe you less as the course goes along. If you also by some sugar free chewing gum whilst on them you hardly get any cravings to have one.
Good luck

I give up smoking with patches. The trouble is to keep without smoking for at least 1 year after stopping. My Habby (we give up together) start to smoke again so... I need to do patches again

The only way you will manage to stop is to really want to, i gave up two months ago after smoking 20 a day and did not use anything to help, i just knew that it was the right time for me and that i could do it. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

throwing the packet in the bin a few years ago worked for me... but that requires willpower (and saves you money on all the other methods). If you have willpower it's the best way to go I think but everyone is different. Just promise me one thing that you won't become a reformed smoker and nag everyone else about the evils of smoking. Good luck dude x
