I play piano by chords... I want to know how I can improve. If you say practice... how do I "practice"? Also... how do I play piano by ear? If it is a gift... at least how do I improve my playing piano by ear?

To play it by ear takes a lot of skill. Most people that play piano, play it with their fingers.

I also play piano by chords - you just have to know your chord structures and then go from there. There are several music book that can help with your chords too. I agree you should practice - pratice makes perfect. I know some people that can play by ear and maybe it is a gift - wish i could play by ear too. Hope i helped you out. Your friend peter b

I was just like you before and I was told by my piano teacher that it is a very common problem for people who pick up the piano (or any other musical instruments) through note reading. See it as just a phase. The more you play, the more you practise, the more you listen to the sounds of the notes and the more you put your mind to it, the faster you will get over that phase. It really comes with practice. Good luck!

remember where the chords are played and how your piano teacher plays them. they need to sound like they flow, and are played all in one go, so they must sound like one note. playing by ear means that you are playing the song without the notes in front of you and only by how it sounds in your ear. the easiest way to play songs by ear is by remembering how the song is played. knowing the song is a bonus. it does take a lot of practise to be able to remember the entire song by ear, but you'd feel better knowing that you can do that. it is not really a gift because there are many piano players out there that can play by ear and when they started playing it they didnt know how to.

Learning by ear is natural for some. Others learn by reading and writing.
I always say: PLAY..not Practice. It's more fun that way!
