I don't think you "average" prices.

Here's a link at Forbes showing nominal and real oil prices back to 1885. It is interactive, you can pick number off the chart if you wish.

If you want to send me your email address, I'll send you a better chart back thru 1984.

I also have daily futures prices for the last couple of years if you want that for Excel.
