For example, would it be better to work for a large government lab or a simple police station? Which state offers the best salaries for this job?

Most "simple police stations" (small town cannot afford a forensic lab let alone the specialists. Big cities and Government would be my guess

Small towns don't have a forensic science lab and the police officers are paid less than the officers in a bigger place. I don't know about salary, but the FBI lab should have the best technology.

Please for the love of God go to the Wisconsin state crime lab in Madison. They've got a 6 month backlog for forensic evidence.
