Well, based on past experience from the times when I was an X-Boyfriend trying to hook up with an X-Girlfriend, 95% of the time it was to get laid, the other 5% was because I knew I made a mistake. On the occasions where I knew I had made a mistake, I could not have hid my feelings even if I wanted to - because I was motivated by Love.

Good question.
They hide their feelings because:
1. Generally men are not in touch with their feelings themselves
2. Men are conditioned from an early age about emotions and feelings being bad. So, they are conditioned not to feel them, not to express them, not taught how to constructively resolve them
3. He might be afraid that if he expresses how he really feels you will give him **** for it

men hide nothing. it's the women who can keep secrets.
on that token, you just have to find a way to get through the barrier. and just because there is a barrier, it doesn't mean he is hiding his feelings.
relationships are give and take, so share! and don't give up just yet.
however, if you get nothing from him, then he is your ex for a reason.
