I bought a travel system at wal-mart for 100 bucks, and it's really nice. But, when I had my son, the hospital sent me home with a car seat. It wasn't one of the crappy ones either, lol. They made me take him home in it, even though I had brought my own.

Wal-mart or Target
I wouldn't buy a used carseat though even if it does save you lots of money. You dont' know if this carseat has ever been in an accident and if he has then it becomes less effective in protecting your child.
You can buy a good new carseat cheap. I would just shop around and compare prices.
Good luck!

This isn't an area where you want to go cheap.
Check out some car seat ratings, and then pick up a car seat. Britax are the safest, but they're like $250+ per seat. Graco are good seats and they're quite a bit cheaper.
But check walmart rather than babies r us or baby depot. Target and Kmart also have better deals.
Carseats have expirations dates because the older the seat is the lest effective it is. The plastic weakens and can break easily

Don't go TOO cheap on a carseat.
We got ours at Walmart.
This isn't an area to scrimp on. I wouldn't buy one used because it could have been in an accident, there could be recalls and lots of people don't know this, but they have expiry dates on them (I guess to get old ones out of circulation as new features become available and before the foam gets crusty and reduces their safety.)

Ask family members or friends if they know anyone who wants to get rid of one. You may get a free seat if not try walmart or target. Never buy from a yard sale or flea market because you never know if the seat has been in an auto accident and could be damaged.

I dont suggest looking solely for a cheap one; you want to consider the safety specs too. But thrift shops are such a blessing. I got my travel system from walmart.com for $119 which i thought was cheap. Thats the best price Ive seen.

Go to Once Upon a Child. They have great gently used items. http://www.ouac.com/ouac/myheadline.asp?S=7322&P=4225&PubID=4339
Also, check with your local CHP office. They often will give you carseats for "free" if you make a donation to a local charity. I got my sons convertible car seat for only $20!
