Do you still have your tonsils & adenoids? Do you snore? You may have a relaxed palate, and if that is the case when you lie down to sleep, it basically closes off your airway. Have your boyfriend listen to you when you sleep - if it seems like you are holding your breath, gasps and/or snores, or your rouse up enough to take a breath - you have obstructive airway disease - more than likely. To help you tonight - you need to sleep on at least two pillows, use a decongestant.
You could also be having gastroesophageal reflux - stomach fluids coming back up your throat - again the two pillows will help tonight, along with antacid, and not eating right before you go to bed.
It could be asthma or allergies, respiratory problems.
Most important-you need to go see the doctor as soon as possible.

You could have sleep apnea, this syndrome is a sleep disorder in which a person repeatedly stops breathing (apnea), or experiences shallow breathing for short periods of time during sleep. Its a blockage of the airway passage due to the relaxation and collapse of throat tissues during sleep. In other words you should see a doctor to determine if this is what you have.
