Here are some fascinating facts about Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi "Amma". The night before she was born, her mother Dayamanti had a dream that she gave birth to Krishna. When Sudhamani (Amma's birthname) was born, she was blue and was in the lotus position with mudra fingers. She remained blue and in that lotus position for several months. Her parents and doctors thought it had to do with a medical condition and were ignorant of the significance of her Divine birth.
When Sudhamani was around 23 years old, she merged into Oneness with Krishna. No one suspected her merged state of consciousness until one day she passed by a neighbor's yard during a Krishna holiday. Many villagers were gathered together listening to a recitation of the ancient tales of Krishna. Sudhamani was drawn into the yard in a blissful mood. She lay down on the branch of a small tree in the exact body posture Krishna was known to assume. The villagers saw in her face, in her smile, the perfect attitude of their beloved Krishna. They were convinced she was possessed by him. She never tried to explain the truth of her experience.
It was during this time she performed her very first miracle which is dramatized on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5od7Kk0OmNA&mode=related&search=
What happened was, that some people demanded her to prove that she was Krishna by showing a miracle, so she said to bring a pitcher of water. The water turned to pudding which never ran out even after everyone took a bite of it. It also lasted more than a week without spoiling.
It was known that when Amma did Krishna Bhava's, she would sometimes turn blue. Also several months of merging into Krishna, she also merged with Divine Mother. You can read a summary of that story on my blog here: http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-O50H77Iib6fVzcbXCb1eO_cIAk0-?cq=1&p=151
Many devotees see Amma as Krishna. She never had more than a 4th grade education and is almost illiterate, and yet She knows every single word of all of the scriptures, knowledge and wisdom of all religions.

It's difficult to separate folk lore and mythology in Religion. Similarly, in case of Krishna, he is believed to be the incarnation of Vishnu, the God of protection.
In my personal opinion, each "avatar" or incarnation of Vishnu highlights a few lessons for mankind. Each incarnation takes place when the "good" is under siege from "evil". The Good triumphs over evil through the incarnation.
Same is true in the case of Krishna as well.
As far as the places are concerned, it's insignificant if they were actually the same places as referred to in the mythology. The "moral" of the story is more important.
I am a Hindu, and this is my personal opinion. No hate or fun intended here.

There is a village in India where everyone wears a peacock feather on their shoe. The reason is that Krishna once killed their king, and the peacock is Krishna's emblem, so by putting it on their shoe they express their contempt for him.
