i suppose it has to do with how one is brought up! a child develops his personality while still small, and if he is brought up in a happy home, with no worries and is taught to be happy, be free and smile, thats how he will turn out!!
i see with myself, growiing up and being allowed to do as i please, i have no grudges and if ever u see me without a smile just know, im REALLY pissed off

fir, I know exactly what you mean. In my case, I rarely smile (even among my friends) unless I am embarrassed by them, or I am actually happy about something. I look at my other classmates at high school and they are so much more relaxed than me, and they laugh at things which I consider trivial.

I think the expression differences are due to shyness and confidence levels. This is why many Japanese people use their own system of emoticons and smilies online, e.g. \(^^)/ , because they are more reserved in real life, very different from jovial anime characters.

The same reason why the cup is either half-full or half-empty. I smile because I am either happy or because I have to fake it at work. It is a learned behavior that happens when one works retail for many years. It also can take a lot out of a person. Suppressing feelings can be bad.

depends on one's mood, one's control of his emotions, one's state of mind at that precise moment, sometimes the level of one's wit... some laugh their heads off, others just smile, others snigger... point is, difficult to know what one's mood is... and unless you gain even just a little smile, it'll be difficlut to know him/her personally.

Sometimes people who laugh alot aren't as happy as they appear.Sometimes it's a defense mechanism to mask their pain.
