There is a Shangri La Farm that is open for farm stay that is located in Yilan, which is near the route between Yilan and Hualien. Price till 30 Nov 2006 are Standard Double room: NT$ 3600 (US$112.50) per room per night. Another good one is the Toucheng Farmstay, located at Toucheng town, which has double room from NT$2000 (US$62.50).
It's convenient if you take the train from Taipei to Hualien, than take the Hualien Bus outside the train station towards Taroko National Park HQ. There are only 2 classes of train to Hualien. Tse Kiang (1st class) and Ju Kwang (2nd Class). Price for 1st class is NT$445 (US$13.90) and 2nd Class is NT$343 (US$10.70). Time taken is approx. 2hr 50mins for 1st class and 3hrs 30 mins for 2nd class (more stops than 1st class, thats why).

unless there is a special reason to go at this time, i would recommend postponing the trip until the political turmoil in taiwan is settled.
even if it does not pose any threat, it is still going to be a pain with potential strikes, demonstrations etc. disrupting traffic and normal life
