They actually occur at the same time. However, since light travels faster than sound, you see the lightning, then hear the thunder. The sooner you hear the thunder, the closer the lightning is to your location.

lighting came first the thunder is the noise cause by the lighting breaking the sound barrier.
if you want to know how far away the storm is count once you see the lighting....for every second the strike was a mile away.
so if you see lighting and you count up to 10 before the thunder then it is 10 miles away

Light first, and then the Sound! (Biblically, God shows you the lightening first to reassure you of His presence, and then arrives the thunder! Scientifically, light travels faster than sound, so you see lightening first, and then you hear thunder, though they both happen at the same time up there!)
