Nah. It was probably just a car backfiring. Unless you're positive it was gunshot and they were nearby, I'd let the people who witnessed it call the cops.

The thing is if you call the police you might draw them to your house and then the thugs will think you saw something. But if you don't call the police then someone could be dying nearby and need help. If I were you I would call the police and tell them you are going out and won't be home for the police when they arrive.

Don't loose your touch of instinct duck down then grab the cord and pull the phone next to you so you can call 911. Don't be an idiot and look out side the window or you will get your house in danger of looking like a rat or better yet getting your head blown off
