A starting wage of $12 is good.

But, you have to promote the best workers to a higher wage ($15-17) real fast.
Cleaning is like any other profession out there.
You want to look for employees that take pride in their work. People that know their craft.
With cleaning, you'll notice who those people are.
Speed is good, but not the most important work habit.
Being thorough is...they'll pay special attention to the finer details.

In the end...they are the ones that will make or break your business.

In Seattle, cleaners get $15 per hour to start. I am sure it is different everywhere. I do suggest that if you hire people you like and trust that you pay them a living wage. If you pay cheap....you will get the employees you deserve.

You could ask an temp agency what they charge clients and deduct 30%. Presumably you will need to pay a social tax, injury insurance in case they fall off a ladder, and an insurance in case something in the client's property gets damaged or stolen. (I wonder if workers in the US get paid when they are sick or on holiday?)

Read the book NICKELED AND DIMED. You won't pay your people any less than you could live on. (it's a funny and informative book, check it out)
