what is the original reasong for a baseball bench to be below the field level (the 'dugout')?

Well they originally put it in left field, but it turned out to be in the way.

But seriously, my guess would be that to put seats closer to the field and not to have a dugout in the fans line of sight.

It was like a trench, a space dug out below the ground.
