A counter consisting of three cascaded flipflops will count from 0 to 7. It can be called a modulus-8 counter. Its application is to cycle through any 8-step process, the simplest of which probably is the multiplexing of 8 signals onto a single output line. Each state of the counter will connect one of the 8 signal sources to the line.
