Good question. Next time it rains and I don't have an umbrella. I won't duck anymore since I can't avoid it.

It keeps the rain from going down your shirt collar which is just gross.
I read a study somewhere credible that said you actually get wetter if you run in the rain that if you walk. It had to do with the impact the water makes against your clothing when you run smack into the raindrops.

have you asked yourself this question? it's a natural reaction to anything coming toward you whether it's a ball, that someone threw like four or five feet away from or right at you, you know that no matter if you move away it's still going to go the direction it was thrown. or have you ever been driving down the road and debree off of the road or a vehicle flys toward your vehicle be it the windshield or side of your car, and instantly moved your head? It all has to do with the brain waves sent to the body.

Mythbusters did an episode proving that you get more wet when you run through the rain rather than walking through the rain...although that wasn't the question, i thought it valid. I would duck so i didn't get water in my eyes, it makes my eyes feel dry from wearing contacts. my two cents...

I think it's natural instinct. When something is falling on someone, their first instinct is to duck. Even if something is held above your head, you will immediately duck, even if there's no chance for you to hit it. You'll see short people ducking through lowered doorways even though there's nothing to hit them. So water coming down, they duck. And also, I think it protects their face from getting wet, and thus making it harder to see.

I think it's down to the type of personality you are - introvert or exrovert. Could also depend upon what type of mood your in as to whether to duck or not.
Someone with depression, for instance, might be more likely to duck becuase they feel more insecure and 'victimised' from the world outside. That's my idea anyway.

It is a human instinct to protect your eyes. Think about it, if something flew by your face you would duck, wouldn't you?
