Things like curing "Evil Eye," casting powerful spells over people's lives. There are rituals that seem insignificant like the one for quick money, which involves placing a lemon under your bed and following certain steps. There are so many. What do you think?

Lots of Navajo folks do traditional ceremonies - chants, rubbing on of ashes, and such. Don't know if it's psychosematic but people do feel much better afterwards. Even local hospitals have rooms just for traditional ceremonies for medicine people.

Yes, of course! Ritual has power for everyone! Take for example the ritual of baptism, of graduation ceremonies, even the ritual of kissing a loved one good-bye in the morning. Humans respond to ritual on a deep level, often feel as if the world is not right if a ritual is neglected.
And then, there's the energy work participated in by the patient or recipient. We all perform energy work on a daily basis in simple, unconscious ways. We think, today, I'm going to do this or that. Then, we often find that circumstances conspire to support our thoughts. Ie: If we feel that something might go wrong, we fulfill that and draw that experience to us, and vica versa. Belief that evokes an emotional response is a powerful tool.
Yes, I believe that curanderas are able to perform powerful acts of healing.

Curandero's are people that practice the white aspect of mexican folk magic. They perform mostly healing and cleanings. Witch doctors are considered African shamans. However in Africa they are called Medicine Men. Weather we believe in what they do is irrelevant. Those that receive services from them believe it is real.

I practice Vodou. In Vodou you must have some faith in the lwa and trust in the Mambo/Hougan. If your heart is not open to the possibility you will be unable to receive the blessings. I believe in the blessings because I have had them. I have had my high blood pressure cured and severe neck and shoulder pain stopped. I have also receive others things I have asked for.

It is not the curanderno, witch doctor, medicine man, shaman, mambo or hougan that do the work. It is the spirits that they work with that do the work. The people are the catalyst. They are simply the ones that ask for the spirits help with the problem. I definitely believe these things can happen I have personally experienced them.

Curanderos are just folk healers. That is, they practice folk medicine. Some are quite good.

Witch doctor is a derogatory term for "Shaman." Again, I hear some are quite good.

Most of their cures are common sense remedies. The problem begins when curanderos delve into 'brujeria,' black magic. Same with shamans.

I try to keep an open mind about these things, Lorena. I try not to ridicule the beliefs of others.

A Curandera is a herb doctor and has nothing to do with bruja or witching. Curanderas often can help people who can't afford doctors, or who doctors can't help.

The other is if folk legend . I've known people who claimed to have been cured of fever by their granny's old superstitions.

I once read- that Witch Doctors are the ONLY doctors that will ALWAYS make you feel better. Why? - Because you end up being so entertained by their rituals & dancing around,-you forget that you're ill !!! :)

I think there's something to it. Zora Neale Huston's career went down the tubes and she died kinda young. It was due to an unsatisfactory offering to a Voodoo god or something.

Unless Curanderas has something to do with Santeria, then I don't know...
