With a history of blood clots in your family, your doctor will probably want to prescribe an estrogen free pill or the "minipill" which is progestin only or you can always try the depo provera shot. You may also want to ask about the nuva ring. It's not estrogen free but, the hormones are very low and it works a bit different than the pill.

You can smoke with any form of birth control it will just increase your chances of having side effects. Since blood clots run in your family with your mother you need to let your doctor know that before getting on any birth control. Cause birth control can cause blood clots. So they will suggest something that will work best for you.
I didn't care to much for the pills. They dont seem to work for any of the females in my family. I was on the shot Depo perva for 5 years and didnt have any problems. Talk to your doctor to see whats best for you.

If there's a history in your family of blood clots on the Pill, then don't use them yourself. And smoking will grossly exacerbate the problem... Try an IUD like Mirena, or some other, non-hormonal method.

It's not exactly safe to smoke with any form of "the pill" but my girlfriends ob/gyn put her on Yasmin after she had a bad experience with Seasonal, probably a similar reaction to what your mother had... she ended up in the ER 2 months after she started taking it... it's also supposed to help more with the endometriosis that she has which is why she is on it... but as always your ob/gyn will know what's best for you...

Ask the doctor to prescribe a pill with less hormones. That will lessen the side effects.
Smoking should always be avoided. Maybe sex will help her stop smoking.

Honestly, you're not supposed to smoke with any of them. I would be wary of taking any them with out talking to your doc about your family history and what happened with your mom taking them. Then, while you're on the pill, she will be able to monitor you and make sure you're not at risk for heart or stroke related problems.
