Got a '92 Honda Accord to tool around town even though it had 200k miles on it because I got it wholesale. Excellent car despite the mileage.

Well, I am sure we both know the old saying that money talks and all the rest walks. for a used car for reliability, non-domestic, this would be hands down toyota or honda. But is paying the premium for a 16 y.o. boy worth the dividends. This is all too dependent on the way he drives and cares for, or abuses, his ride. Personally, I'd put him an older Caprice or Crown Vic for various reasons, and let him worry about the fuel bill. Teaches responsibilty, particularly with money. However, if he is known to be the exception to the rule, and wont bend to peer pressure, then the original plan of Honda or Toyota makes perfect sense, as they will retain abit of their value if cared for and should be easy to sell when it is time to upgrade. By the way, a carfax is always a good idea on any used car, unless its just some old $200 door slammer, not what you indicated as looking for.

First of all, no matter what kind of car you get they will always goof off a lot. I saw some people saying that minivans and such will prevent this. That's not true, we got into more trouble in my friends' parent's minivan simply because we could get more people in it.

If you are looking at non-American cars only I would suggest a Honda. My first car was a Civic hatchback and I loved it. Hondas are great for guys and girls and the maintenance on them is pretty much nonexistent aside from oil changes. You could also look into the new Jetta. They are very affordable and get great gas mileage like the Honda and are a bit more trendy (at least where I live).

I love cars, it is kind of my thing. I would strongly recommend a Honda or Toyota. Both of these cars manufactures make solid cars that last for years. I know quite a few people that own Honda's, some at least five years, and have never had one problem with them. Alright now here is the catch 22, I am going to let you in on a secret. Geo/Chevy metro's or prism's are awesome cars. Why, because they have a Toyota engine in them. And they are so affordable. My first car was a Chevy metro but I traded it in for a brand new sedan. Just because I wanted more room. That was one of the biggest regrets of my life. Hope that helps, good luck!

I have found that the Saturn Sedan is a great used vehicle which can be purchased at a reasonable price.

It is build in the US and parts are easy to find, the bodies are made of dent resistant material and are an easy fix.

My best advise is to get the first time driver into a recognized driver training program which will reduce the cost of insurance and set a better behavior behind the wheel.

Umm well I think toyota corollas and honda civics have side airbags...but im not sure how many years back they were implimented. Those are the highest rated foreign cars and especially for a young kid. Also a Hyundai Elantra is good. However when anyonme ever asks about which used car to get for a first driver I ALWAYS say...Chevy Cavalier...

Whether the vehicle is for a boy or girl consider getting a small truck. This way the driver can only transport one other person and you don't have to worry about them hauling a bunch of friends around.

pretty much any honda accord from approx. 1998 and newer will have side airbags-also seatbelt pre-tensioners and ect: only recently do civics have this feature. subaru wrx is a popular choice for young drivers as is the nissan 240SX- sporty- if it was my kid I would also look at imported suv's (honda crv and toyota rav-4 come to mind...) 4x4,of course! better traction in adverse conditions.pretty much anything that appeals to you will probably be a good choice, kid don't really care what he drives, just that he gets to!!! question him as you drive as to his preferences with cars you see during- you will be able to get the perfect ride for him that way-wish my dad did that for me - I ended up with a moped as a first ride-(lol)

Get a minivan or a station wagon. They're extremely practical and not prone to feeding teenagers' race car driver fantasies.
