Well, I don't have a rating for music I like, and perhaps it would take days of consideration.
Basically, I think we could rate him among other vocalists in his time period, and I'd rate him a 9 of 10. Full rating would go to Chris Cornell or Eddie Vedder himself, 'cause their voices and style meant more For Me.
Cobain was a great singer, but (and this is just my opinion) I think he's overrated. If (and only if) Superunknown was launched before Nevermind and not the contrary as it was, perhaps we'd be discussing Cornell instead.
And as why rockstars are such a fake, just imagine everything you ever wanted, everything, was at your hand. Fame, fortune, sex, dope. Combine it with the stress of traveling all the time, the photo shoots, the media, the fans adoring you as long as you live up to their expectations. The only free time you have, you get calls from your agent wondering when the next album will be recorded, and what are you gonna do to make it sell as much. Would you keep your feet on the ground still?

Kurt Cobain will always be on the top of that list but music has been boring for some time now so I do hope that someone with some passion would come out soon and join that list.

cobain was erratic. brilliant but erratic and certainly one of a kind. not the greatest guitar player but had a great grunge voice and catchy songs that really created a new genre. maybe once in a generation there is someone like cobain... hoping we are due soon. I always admire james hetfield-metallica, wow that guy had presence

Going out on a limb, I don't think he's anything special, and I think he;s overrated. I wouldn't put him in, or anywhere near my top ten. Rockstars are fake because 35 year old guys don't like the type of music that will make them rich, and they have to have fake personas to do what they do. You can't blame them really.
