So he says: Would you like to go to a movie with me sometime?
And you say: Yes.
And he says: So, how about "Blah, Blah, Blah Friday night at 7:30?
And you say: Okay.
And he says: So, I'll pick you up. Can I have your address?
And you give him your address.
That's a date.
If he says, hey do you want to bum around one day and maybe get a sandwich or something? And you say, yes. And he says: okay, I'll meet you at Chilis at noon............that's not a date. Tha'ts two buddies chilling together and splitting the bill.
A date is intentionally "his" idea to take you out.

The man will specify, especially if he offers to treat you. If you go dutch then it's a friendly outing.
