For one thing, most people don't know what goth really is. They think of goth as the stupid little kids who shop at Hot Topic and wear ugly baggy pants and draw dorky squiggly lines on their faces and listen to crappy metal. Those kids are not goths. Real goth came from punk and post-punk music in the late '70s and early '80s and in my opinion is basically the more mellow, darker side of punk.
To answer your question about why someone would be goth, well for the uninformed teens who think they're goth when they're not, they probably do it because they think it's cool or something.
But for someone like me who is into the actual goth subculture, I got into it because of the music and the fashion and aesthetics.

If you're talking about real goths, its just they way they are. They're being true to themselves. They see the world as filled with pain and misery, but live in it anyway, because it sure beats the alternative. For teen goths, they're just doing it because its this generation's cool outsider group, and they want to be cool.

there is no purpose. Some people do it as a rebellion thing, others do it to fit in with their peers. But as I mostly do ( fav colors are black and red) I wear my favorite colors, it has nothing to do with satan, or friends, or rebellion, just the clothes i feel most comfortable in.

that is like saying, why does a person dress preppy? or like a jock? or punk? or pinup? or teeny bopper? What possesses people to dress like thugs or cheerleaders? What possesses people to dress like sluts or punk rockers. You dress the way you feel comfortable.
