Is it safe to buy Guppies from Petco or Petsmart? Which one or from a local fish store? What other items do I also need for them? Which is more suitable, a separate tank for fry? breeding net? or just putting a lot of places to hide in the same tank?

Buy guppies from any store, but I find that small personally owned stores buy from local breeders and have fish that are more healthy (better bred) and brightly colored. Make wure you see no sign of disease in the tank or the tank next to it. Add aquarium salt to your tank to prevent diseases when adding new fish. You will need a heater for guppies, so it might be easier to buy a larger tank with a divider for a grow-out area, as you will only need to buy one heater and filter that way. http://www.petsolutions.com/Aquarium+Dividers-I-10810600-I-.aspx Plant palnts and floating plants on the nursery side of your aquarium, and a breeding box for expecting guppies that lets the fry drop into the tank.http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F11AX/Class/Fish+Supplies+Breeding+Baby+Traps/T1/F11AX+0171+0306/EDP/9762/Itemdy00.aspx

its ok 2 buy the guppies from ptsmart, but you hav 2 mak sure they swim correctly, no whitespots, and if theyre breathing at a nomral pace. Anyway take this one step at a time, first only but up to 3 guppies the first time cuz the aquarium has to go thru the nitrogen cycle, and thatll last for about a monthand a half, guppies probably wont breed before that. Anyway u should get a heater, filter, thermomter,a hood w/light,ar pump w/stone, gravel, opptional plants and decorations. U can use a breeding net if u want 2 keep 6 or seven of the fry but if u wantem all it would be a good idea 2 get a seperate tank. If u want 2 let nature take its course and let them struggle for survival you should get lots of plants and a 20 gallon tank, cuz the bigger it is the harder it is for the big fish 2 findem and eatem. good luck ><>

Both stores are ok, as well as lfs. Wherever you buy them from, just make sure there's not a lot of dead fish lying around, or fish that look sickly, have white salt-like sprinkles or white fungus on them. And not just the one tank the guppies are in, check them all out. A lot of stores use one system for filtering all the tanks.

Depends what you want to do with the fry. If you're planning on keeping them, gonna need a very large tank, because they breed an awful lot, and you will quickly be overrun with them.

go to petsmart, they have lots of different guppies, and I would go with a breeding net if your budget is low..
