I live in Rockford IL, and I tried out tocome a fireman. I didn't pass the acessment test with a 67. I'm now talking a EMT class to earn a basic license and next spring will continue working on my Assciates in Fire Science. Is there anytips on becoming fireman. Also, I know its very hard, but what about the Chicago FD in the future. My dad is from there and its been my dream to be a Chicago fireman.

keep on trying
i was a volunteer firefighter for a few years and went through all the training mods but i never took the test to be firefighter1 in my state.
it's hard but i was 36 yrs old when i did it and i kept right up through all the physical training with the young guys.
i was actually thinking of going back to take the test and joining the call company.
firefighting is awesome..the first time i went into a structure fire was was the scariest and greatest moment of my life....
just keep on trying..the world needs more of us.

Follow Tajo's advice. Address the issues that you know you didn't test well during the assessment test. The EMT license is a good idea since it is required at the fire departments in my area. Talk to someone on the Chicago FD for their advice.

My fiance started out as a volunteer with the local department. I realize in some counties, the departments do not have volunteer positions, but check it out anyway... or try a surrounding county. Often, they pay for you to attend fire training like ELF and Fire 1 and 2. My fiance also was sent to EMT Basic classes on their dime.

Your other option is to go to Fire Academy, which in my state costs around $6k, where you live for 3 months, but you earn all the Fire certs, plus water rescue and maybe some others. But keep in mind that with the Fire Academy, not only are you paying for school, but you can't hold down a job to pay for it since you are living and working at that academy. So, someone has to help you out here or you'll have to use your savings, if you have any.

Good luck! :)

The best way, is to work your way up and show that you have a love for it, and are dedicated to your work. Volunteer at a local FD. That'll get you some experience and some hands on training as well. I reccomend working out to if you are going to do this, especially your legs.
