The classic of that genre is "The Lady and the Tiger." But I read one recently [sorry; can't find it to tell you title and author] where a sub-plot of the story was a romance, and at the end, it is still very open whether the couple would get together, get married, whatever. The author obviously wanted the reader to draw his or her own conclusions, but I was frustrated. I think it was possible that the book was intended as a series, and we learn about this couple in the next book. But there was no indication on the cover, or in the book, that it was meant to be a series.

Try "The Lady and the Tiger", that's pretty open ended.
