Yoga is the scientific way of disciplining the mind.Mind is a flow of thoughts at the mercy of your intellect/conscience.

We all know that our breathing pattern is affected by the thoughts in our mind - emotions. But even vice-versa is true.Hence by controlling the breath you can easily control the mind too.
Practise of pranayama helps discipline the mind making it fit for meditation.
Remember perseverance and patience are necessary to achieve anything .

First one has to find it. Then one has to know how to address it, since it is your MIND that determines whether or not you can find it. In the West we are very ignorant regarding the MIND realm. The reason for this is basically a natural fear of the unknown within ourselves, and a century of denial of the MIND and consciousness by the fields of mental health and behavioral psychology.

One can, after many years of devoted meditation, of at least two hours a day, begin to tell the difference between thinking and intuition. With an increase in focusing upon intuition, one learns how to access the lower aspects of his Apapsyche, or the Operational Energy of the Soul.

When one finally accesses his Apapsyche, he will have earned some ability to resist the thoughts of his MIND. He will then be able to resist doing that which his MIND orders, if he believes it to be wrong. Without longer meditation [thirty or forty years], this is about as close as one can get to "discipline of the MIND".

Some people "think" otherwise.... and good for them. But, they are fooling lthemselves. Ones Fate Kama is something that cannot be ignored, avoided, or denied. If ones life "fits" ones Fate Karma, then one can claim to have full discipline over his MIND. But, should his Fate Karma take a turn on him, he will quickly find how little say he has relative to the direction and nature of his life.

example: Years ago I needed to quit smoking. My mind said I need the cigarette. I had to train myself, my mind that I really did not need it. I actually needed help so I prayed to God to help me stop and be in the right mind to do so. The day came, I squeezed a 1/2 pack of cigarettes into, threw them away and have not smoked in 6 years now. It's mind over matter and the Good Lord with a helping hand.

In order to discipline the mind you first of all must know yourself. Then you must understand yourself. Armed with this knowledge, you can do anything.

Your mind it like a monkey, always on the move. In order to slow it down you have to fix it on one object. Initially you will find that it is difficut to keep your mind on one object as other thoughts will come in. Just bring you mind back to the object. In time to come you will find that you can concentrate on one object longer and longer until one day you can just concentrate without any interference from other thoughts.
