ever heard of PEMDAS....or, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally? this is the acronym used to help you remember the order of operations, or order in which you should address parentheses, exponents, mulitiply, divide, add, and subtract complex problems such as the one you presented.
so.....
step 1) take care of anything in parentheses first. assume your problem is written as (2+2-5x4+37) / 7. this means you should take care of all the operations within the parentheses before attempting to divide anything by seven.
step2) calculate anything with an exponent. your prob has no exponents, so move on to step 3
step 3) multiply. in your problem, 5 is being mulitplied by 4, so you would rewrite the problem as (2+2-20+37) / 7
step 4) divide. remember we are still working within the parentheses, so this is NOT the time to divide by seven. move on to step 5
step 5) add then subtract going from left to right. rewrite your problem as
4-20+37. this becomes -16+37, which is equal to 21. don't ignore the (-) sign in front of the 16!!!!!!!!!!!
6) you now have 21/7 , which can be reduced to 3.
voila!!! you are done.

The answer is 3, that is if you actually meant 5 times 4 not 5x like an algebra equation. In this problem you have to remember that multiplication and division have to be done first. So 5x4=20, then plug that into the equation. 2+2-20+37=21/7 which equals 3. Hope that helps, good luck.

Let's put the question in an alegbraic form:
[2 + 2 - (5 *4) + 37 ] / 7
= [4 - 20 + 37 ]
= [(-16) + 37]
= 21 / 7
=3

You are combining words along with symbols, so let me first convert all your words into symbols:
2+2-5x4+37/7
= 4-20+5.2857 = -10.7143
If you meant the words after a paranthesis: then it would look like:
(2+2-5x4+37)/7 = 3

2+2-5x4+37/7 = -10.7143
2+(2-5)x4+37/7 = -4.71429
((2+2)-(5x4)+37)/7 = 3
Feel better?

I'm going to assume that the x in the problem means to multiply. So that means that you need to follow the order of operations to simplify the numerator of the fraction.
Do any multiplication first.
Then add and subtract from left to right.
After you have a single number answer for the numerator divide by 7 to get your final answer.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.
